So far, the main blood type system documented for the cat is known as the AB group. It is composed of 3 alleles : A, B, and AB. The A allele is dominant over the B. Most of domestic cats have the A group. The frequency of the groups A, B and AB is nearly the same everywhere but it can vary from a race to the other.
For the cat, the presence of natural alloantibodies makes the determination of the blood type compulsory before any transfusion. Indeed B cats produce in large quantity anti-A antibodies. Thus a B queen that would give birth to A kittens would give them, from the first milking and through the colostrum, antibodies directed against their red blood cells, provoking a destruction of the red blood cells that can be lethal for the kitten (neonatal isoerythrolysis). If the blood type is determined at the birth by taking blood on the umbilical cord (thanks to a strip provided by Alvedia), a weaning has to be done for a few days and a life saved.
In case of transfusion, the blood types of the donor and the recipient have to be determined, and their compatibility established in order to avoid transfusion shocks that can threaten the life of animals.
Alvedia’s Quick Test, very easy to handle, is perfect for this use. In 2 minutes maximum, and with just one drop of blood, you can determine your cat’s blood type. Moreover, Alvedia’s Quick Test works on anaemic animals, as well as in cases of auto-agglutination,
So don’t hesitate anymore….
Think prevention, think Alvedia !
